How to Calculate Base Material for Pavers (Prevent Sinking)

Mark Williams
Founder, RemoteQuoter

The #1 reason paver patios fail within 3 years is an insufficient or poorly calculated gravel sub-base.

Many hardscapers focus entirely on calculating the surface area for the bricks, and completely eyeball the cubic yardage required for the modified crushed stone (21A / RCA) base. When you under-order base material, crews tend to spread it too thin rather than halting the job to wait for another delivery.

Proper compaction of a mathematically precise 21A sub-base is the only way to prevent paver settling.

A standard paver patio requires a minimum of 4 to 6 inches of compacted base. A driveway requires 8 to 12 inches. Calculating this volume requires converting 2D square footage into 3D cubic yards. Use the engine below to get the exact ton/yardage required.

The True Cost of a Thin Sub-base

If you calculate a 1,000 sq ft patio and assume a 2-inch base will "be fine" because you didn't order enough material, you are guaranteeing a callback. Freeze-thaw cycles and ground settling will instantly create tire ruts and sinking bricks.

How to Calculate Sub-Base Volume

  1. Get the Square Footage: Use satellite tools to trace the patio (e.g., 500 sq ft).
  2. Determine Depth: Decide on a 6-inch base for foot traffic. 6 ÷ 12 = 0.5 feet.
  3. Calculate Cubic Feet: 500 × 0.5 = 250 Cubic Feet.
  4. Convert to Cubic Yards: 250 ÷ 27 = 9.25 Yards.
  5. Factor Compaction (20%): Base material shrinks when compacted. 9.25 × 1.2 = 11.1 Yards.
