Paver Waste Percentage: How to Avoid Running Out Mid-Job

Mark Williams
Founder, RemoteQuoter

There is a dangerous game that masonry contractors play every time they order materials for a massive patio or driveway installation. They trace the area, calculate the raw square footage, and then "guesstimate" how many extra pallets they should order for cuts and breakage.

If you guess too low, your crew runs out of bricks on the final day. They stand around idle while you frantically call the supply yard, only to find out that specific color-blend is on backorder for three weeks. If you guess too high, you finish the job with two full pallets left over. When you try to return them, the supply yard hits you with a brutal 20% restocking fee.

Guessing your paver pallet orders leads to catastrophic restocking fees.

You are losing money on both sides of the equation. To stop the bleeding, you must replace guessing with an exact mathematical Waste Percentage Calculator.

The Financial Cost of Wasted Pavers

Let's look at the financial impact of guessing your pallet orders on a $25,000 driveway installation.

The True Waste Percentage Rules

The mathematical footprint of a patio is rarely the actual amount of brick you need. Every time your saw operator cuts a brick to fit against a curved border or a house foundation, the remaining half of that brick is often useless. It is "waste."

Here are the exact industry-standard waste percentages you should apply based on the complexity of the design:

  • Standard Straight Driveway (5% Waste): If you are laying a simple running bond pattern in a perfect rectangle, cuts are minimal. Add exactly 5% to your total square footage.
  • Curved Patios & Walkways (10% Waste): Any time you introduce a sweeping curve or a circular fire pit, the saw operator will destroy hundreds of bricks to make the radii fit perfectly. Add 10%.
  • Intricate Patterns & Herringbone (15% Waste): Herringbone is notorious for generating massive amounts of triangular scrap pieces at the borders. If the patio is also curved, you must apply a 15% waste factor to avoid running out.

Stop Guessing. Automate It.

Doing these conversions manually—calculating the surface area of a single 4x8 brick, dividing it into your total square footage, and then applying a 10% multiplier—is how mistakes happen.

That is why we built the Paver Yield Calculator (embedded above). You simply trace the property using our satellite tool, plug the square footage into the engine, and slide the "Waste Factor" toggle based on the complexity of the patio. It instantly outputs your exact brick count and pallet order.
